Working Towards a Carbon Neutral Future

For the past 5 years, Green Coast Rubbish has worked hard to provide a sustainable alternative to traditional methods of rubbish removal. It is our hope that by recycling, donating, and reusing items whenever possible, we will contribute to Vancouver achieving its zero waste objectives, and its ultimate goal of being the Greenest City by 2020.

In the future, waste management and recycling will (out of necessity) be inextricably linked. Green Coast Rubbish has always been committed to operating in an environmentally-conscious way and, in an effort to continue this commitment to sustainability, we recently began the first stage of Climate Smart.

Climate Smart, a social enterprise originally launched as a program of Ecotrust Canada, has now worked with more than 300 small and medium size enterprises to find ways to reduce their carbon footprint and build a more sustainable economy.

As part of our first Climate Smart session, we calculated our green house gas inventory (carbon foot print). We are proud to report that, over the past year alone, Green Coast Rubbish recycled or composted:

  • 52.66 tonnes of green and organic waste
  • 50.8 tonnes of recyclable material, including appliances, electronics, TV’s, batteries, paint, oil, tires, etc…
  • 31.8 tonnes of construction material, including metal, drywall, concrete
  • Maintained an overall diversion rate of 75% for the 179.51 tonnes of material we hauled—something our leading competitors haven’t yet managed to do

Needless to say we are ecstatic with our accomplishments to date. Stay tuned for future updates on the next phase of the Climate Smart program, as we pursue our goal of reducing Green Coast’s carbon footprint while continuing to offer competitive rates and reliable service.
