Green Coast Rubbish is excited to announced that we will be participating in the inaugural Urban Repurpose Re-Use It and Upcycle Fair on Sunday July 9th. The outdoor fair will include an upcycling market, art show and kids crafting station – and it’s a free event.

The Green Coast Rubbish table at the Re-Use it and Upcycle Fair will showcase some unique repurposing projects using materials from various projects. We are very proud of the handcrafted upcycled tote bags by designer Carol Smith which were upcycled from canvas claim comfort kit bags collected from a recycling project with BCAA. These limited-edition tote bags will be offered for sale at the fair.

The designer of these amazing bags, Carol Smith, is a creative soul with many creative interests including costume, set design and bag making. She loves to inspire groups to create works of textile art from discarded fabric and has ties to the local upcycling group Our Social Fabric.

“I see beauty in hand-made quilts, hand-crafted lace and the texture of vintage fabrics that tell a story of our elders. I am delighted to partner with Green Coast Rubbish on a mission to upcycle and extend the life of unwanted textiles”.

– Carol Smith, Designer

The ultimate goal of the Re-Use It and Upcycle Fair is to help change the attitudes around what is considered waste, educate the public on the impact reuse and upcycling can have to the environment, grow the circular economy and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to design and create using waste materials.

In 2021, it was estimated that about 77,600 tonnes of material was reused in the Metro Vancouver region. By keeping reusable items out of waste and recycling streams, Metro Vancouver will continue to be one of the most successful communities in North America1 regarding waste reduction and recycling.

“Our hope is that the Re-Use It & Upcycle Fair becomes an annual event that helps highlight the need and creates an opportunity to rethink waste.”

Tom Riessner, Founder of Urban Repurpose.

“We think it’s a great opportunity to engage with like minded organizations and to be inspired by the artists, makers, vendors and companies who are committed to finding creative ways to re-use and repurpose materials,” adds Green Coast Rubbish CEO Eamonn Duignan.
